Hunterston B nuclear power station closes after 46 years

Electricity generation has ended at Scotland’s Hunterston B nuclear power plant with the shutting down of Reactor 4, an advanced gas-cooled reactor. Operator EDF says the power station produced enough electricity during its lifetime to power every home in Scotland for nearly 31 years.


NRC denies Oklo licence application

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has denied Oklo Power's application to build and operate an Aurora compact fast reactor in Idaho, saying gaps in the information supplied by the company mean that the regulator's review of the combined licence application cannot move forward. Oklo can submit a "complete application" in the future and can request a hearing on the NRC decision.


ČEZ: 'We will speed up everything that we can'

Czech utility ČEZ expects to announce the tender process for a new reactor at Dukovany in February, CEO Daniel Beneš said in an interview with public broadcaster Český rozhlas. The company is ready to accelerate and expand its nuclear plans to potentially build four new reactors in light of the EU Taxonomy.


Uranium sector monitors evolving Kazakh situation

Disruptions in Kazakhstan, where ongoing unrest may add to pre-existing operating risks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, could be a "significant catalyst" for the uranium market, Canadian uranium company Cameco has said. Kazakh uranium producer Kazatomprom has said it will meet all delivery deadlines.


Nuclear and gas criteria set for inclusion in EU taxonomy

The European Commission has released to member states for consultation a draft of the complementary Delegated Act of the EU Taxonomy Regulation covering certain gas and nuclear activities. The Commission notes that in light of respective assessments "it is necessary to recognise that the fossil gas and nuclear energy sectors can contribute to the decarbonisation of the Union's economy."


IAEA releases guide to stakeholder engagement

The International Atomic Energy Agency has published its first "guide level" publication to support national efforts to engage with stakeholders throughout the life cycle of all nuclear facilities. To succeed, nuclear projects need to engage with all relevant stakeholders, including the public, and explaining nuclear energy, strengthening relationships and building trust with stakeholders is key to this, the Agency said.


Inner dome installed at Taipingling 1

The inner safety dome has been installed on the containment building of unit 1 of the Taipingling nuclear power plant in China's Guangdong province, China General Nuclear has announced. Taipingling unit 1, the first of six Hualong One units planned at the site, is scheduled to start up in 2025.


Nuclear icebreaker Sibir enters service

Posiva applies to operate used fuel disposal facilities

Finnish radioactive waste management company Posiva Oy has submitted its application for an operating licence for the used fuel encapsulation plant and final disposal facility currently under construction at Olkiluoto. The repository - the first in the world for used fuel - is expected to begin operations in the mid-2020s.


Ukraine pushes for domestic uranium supply
